     The Kirkus review is also on the Amazon site, and I can guarantee that 
     they didn't have the publishers review it.

Different reviewers and review outlets do things differently.  My 
personal preference would be that reviewers never use such copy -- like 
you said, it looks bad.  But Midwest Book Reviews seems to do that quite 
a bit if they like a book (Lineland was an Editor's Choice), simply 
quoting some of the promotional copy and adding a sentence or two of 
their own. 
     
Perhaps the review in the July 1 of Kirkus Reviews will be more to your 
liking.  (I haven't seen it yet, but I don't think they ever quote 
promotional copy, no matter how much they like a book.)
