Oh, yeah.

Nation-building, empire-bulding, the Military-Industrial-Academic complex
have *always* been behind much of science.  Remember Galileo's first real
job was working in the Venetian Arsenal.

Remember Bacon's Big Three Inventions: the compass, gunpowder, and the
Printing Press.  Knowing how to get there, how to blow up the natives with
minimal risk, and how to Spread the Word.
