Actually, it does take place in LA. (I saw it again last night) At some
point in the film, I think when Alice calls the cab, "Van Nuys" is
mentioned...now I'm *just* a New Yorker, but that sounds like CA to me.
Yeah, I think I remember that. And Alice WAS clearly a Valley Girl.
While on the subject, in my recent reading of Crying, I sort of felt that Pynchon didn't express the Southern California scene with quite the familiarity of, say, a Chandler, which is understandable of course. If memory serves, in the shuttling back and forth between SoCal and the Bay Area, the expression "up North", as the Southlanders always say, was only used once and rather late in the book. Of course, Oedipa was FROM Up North so she'd wouldn't be expected to . . . ooops, just disproved my case. He DID get San Francisco fairly well. Way to go, Pynch. Sorry I doubted you.
