Waking the Braves

Isn't there an object called a breaker which floats offshore at beaches
which forces  waves to crest further off from shore thereby making the surf
that actually hits the coast calmer.

I haven't seen the film, but I know the plotline. In some ways isn't the
main female character performing this function for her husband.

He sends her out to perform sexual acts and then describe them to him as
some sort of comfort to him in his infirmity. She acts as a buffer between
him and the world.
I haven't seen the film yet, I am looking forward to seeing it. This image
is the idea that sprung to my mind from the title and the plot
descriptuions I have read.
