There is deeper wit here possibly - the name of the objects, at least where
I come from is *groynes*,  at my local childhood beach,  lines of low wooden
walls, with 3 metre uprights every few yards, in parallel along the beach at
right angles to the shore line.  They broke waves as they approached the
shore.
