YES.  I wouldn't even really tar this one w/the "SF novel" tag, as it's
more of a, gee, literate futuro-fantasy a la Calvino or the previously
unmentioned (as far as I've noticed), brilliant _Little, Big_ by John
Crowley ('course, I read it when I was 15, but it was head & shoulders over
the other "upper echelon" "speculative fiction" I was reading in a vain
attempt to stay interested in the genre).

Theodore Sturgeon, anyone?  Or the _Starmaker_ guy?  Alfred Bester?
