You'll find a careful historical review of the Pynchon family history in my

They did come from England, but, as I comment in the piece, a surviving
Pynchon threatened to sue Hawthorne for using their name and he replied that
he hadn't meant to damage them. A portion of the letter is quoted in the
article.
