Neal Stephenson (was Re: Radicalism of reading)

Neal Stephenson's first novel is _Big U_, hard to find in bookstores, easy
to find in libraries. It's "conventional" fiction in the tradition of
Richard Farina's _Been Down So Long..._.

His second novel is _Zodiac_, a very fast-paced "ecological thriller,"
widely available as are his third and fourth that you mentioned.

He's also co-written two books with his uncle, under the pen name Stephen
Bury.
They are _Interface_ and _The Cobweb_.

I've read and enjoyed all but the last (which I just picked up last week).

PS - if you, or anyone reading this, gets to the part in _The Diamond Age_
where he describes the advantages of Victorian morality (and talks about
how in moral relativism the only valid criticism is hypocrisy), I'd love to
know the page number.
