     I was going to suggest Leopold and Loeb, or more aptly Bonnie and 
     Clyde, but somehow Auden and Isherwood or Engels and Marx seems closer 
     to correct...

So far, we've had suggestions for other 'pairings' after which M & D are 
modelled: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern, Laurel & Hardy. Anthony Lane comes up 
with an interesting one in his New Yorker review: he suggests Beckett's 
Mercier & Camier. I had thought about the more obvious Didi & Gogo from 
_Godot_ ...
     
(Lane's review is one of the more perceptive and sympathetic ones I've read 
yet).
