Will's Students: Andrew

This is the last of my students to post to the list. Thanks to all (esp. Paul
Mackin, Field School Hero!) who have responded. The relatively few responses
I've received so far have made a HUGE impact on these students. Please don't
hesitate to post a question, criticism or shout of encouragement to any of these
kids.

Again, we welcome your critiques to be posted back to the list.

My next student is Andrew Hoffar, writing about William Vollmann.

************

"The Blue Wallet" was a very interesting story. There were many of the
"splits" in the plot that made it very interesting. On one side there were
the Koreans, who were all friends with Bill. Primarily Jenny, his
girlfriend. And then on the other side, there were the skinheads and
"Bootwoman" Marisa. Between these two (or three, if you were to include
Bill) groups, there is formed a very intriguing "split."

Bill seems to be stuck between these two opposite sides. And his problem
is that he is very good friends with both Marisa and with Jenny. He seems
as though he could join either side. Although he does say he would never
make it in with the skinheads because he had never learned how to fight.
Most of the time he seems troubled with how his Korean girlfriend, Jenny,
and the racist skinheads and Marisa will get along. He knows that Marisa
should never mess around with his Jenny, because that was a very strict
moral rule that everyone followed by.

These two opposite sides seem as though they could be constantly getting
in mental and physical battles. Although they never do because they are
linked by this special bridge, their friend Bill. He is what seems to keep
them all together. He was scared about the skinheads attacking them, but
that never happened because the friendship between the two parties should
never be broken.
