Errors or tweaks?
My following of the various spoiler threads is spotty, so please forgive if this has been
mentioned, but the subject of geographical errors reminds me of a little comment around
p. 134 or so regarding one of the Longitude proposals, one that relied on *alternate
mappings* (don't have a copy before me). As always in TRP--this is especially true of
GR--one has to be careful to note that *errors* are often--tweakings--of our reality frame (a
signature of Nabokov too, as all residents of New Wye know). I think this novel, like
GR, is among other things, Pyn's continuing play w/ the alternate universe/alternate
history/alternate geography genre, as we have discussed in the past re: GR. I'm not saying
there can be no errors, only that one has to consider the alternative before judging every
counterfact an *error.*
