Oh come on, guys! I was spun! The conversation I had with Ulin lasted 45
minutes; I've got a transcript and might web it if I get the chance. I thought
I was one of us!

Aha, Patrick, *you're* the one!
That distance was an optical illusion, pal. I TOLD him, we had this party for
M&D at MASON Hall, okay, at Pomona, on pub date 4/30/97. That the most
surprising people, who ought to have known better, phoned in to ask if hisself
was gonna show. Like the prominent book review editor, his folks were still
bothering us for a photo, who mentioned that the historic Mason & Dixon were
funny that same way about oil on canvas, they never allowed their portraits to
be painted, did I know that, huh?
Ulin's piece misrepresents, sure. Look, Patrick, I didn't *ask* to be treated
like Professor Edwin Corey (the double-talking stand-up comedian TRP sent to
accept the National Book Award for _V._). But even locally the book's been
getting great press, and I hope Tom's glad.
cheers,
