Transit of Venus (spoiler I guess)

I am very curious how the Transit of Venus event fits in with the 
theme(s) of M&D, i.e. its signifigance.  My first read through, this 
event seems to be understated, more than I thought it would (maybe I was 
suaded by the Ny Observer pre-review).  I guess what I'm asking is what 
does the TOV portend?  Has anyone come up with deeper connections between 
this cosmological event and what is happening on the earth, to our heroes 
and others?
