A couple of weeks ago I was crossing the moors between East Lancashire (where
I live) and West Yorkshire (West Riding as was). My friend doing the driving
told me about this blind surveyor who had been responsible for the creation of
the straight, undulating road we were on. No visto here, peat bog the
landscape
traversed, they used bundles of sheep fleeces as foundations for the road - to
absorb the water. He was a little surprised when a few days later I showed him
the passage (p702) in M&D which names Blind Jack Metcalf. He had read a book
about him some years back, maybe one of our skilled librarians can do a search
and find the title etc.
