Photographer-writer Luc ("Low Life") Sante reviews M&D on page 65 of the
current issue of New York (5/19/97). Illustrating the review is a blurry
photograph of the back of the book, apparently taken just outside of an
unidentified bookstore in Manhattan. Only kidding (or trying to...).

On page 61 of this week's Entertainment Weekly (5/23/97), the Best-Seller
list (taken from Publisher's Weekly) opens with a little item that runs as
follows:

Doubtin' Thomas?

No tours, no interviews. No nothing!" confirmed Thomas Pynchon's publicist
when asked about her author's promotional contributions to *Mason & Dixon*.
No surprise. Sometimes it's unclear whether Pynchon is more famous for
his esoteric, award-winning literature or his tenacious noninvolvement in
hawking it. In any case, the long-awaited, *long* novel, looking a trifle
out of place between spring perennials Steel and Grisham, has justified its
200,000-copy first printing with a No. 3 debut. Wherever you are, Tom, we
hope you're smiling.
