Well of course they didn't respond, Dale!  They thought you were with the Tristero.  In 
fact, a hastily scribbled note retrieved by a custodian that night after the performance 
shows you were in fact the object of much, though discreet, attention:

"Those tangled puppets' Strings 
At masquerados ' silly shows
Reveal the dark Designs
Of ev'ry ebon rubber Nose"

The note is currently being checked for authenticity.
