Well, I got my fiancee (then girlfriend) to read _COL49_, by presenting it
to her as a gift. I figured it would be the best on-ramp for Pynchon--it
was for me. She thought it was "pretty good," or words to that effect; but
as a former English/creative writing student trained in a more strictly
realist style, she is not entirely taken with TRP's "games," "magic
realism," etc. She is not disparaging--she recognizes my great interest,
and the limitations of her own training. In fact, after listening to me
babble about _Mason & Dixon_ for weeks, she is strongly considering reading
it. She is heartened that it actually involves real historical events and
characters...tho I did warn her that TRP takes rather great liberties.
Also, she just graduated from law school, and one of her last courses
was American Legal History. So she's interested in seeing Pynchon's take
on the Colonial 1760s.
