I used to get really bored when waiting for an ex-girlfriend of mine to get
ready to go out. She would sit in the sink and put on her makeup, spending
upwards of an hour to get ready. (She looked great, but, damn, that's a
lot of time...) Anyways, I decided to pass the time by reading Vineland
out loud to her. That way she got to see what the hell I was raving about
all of the time and I occupied time which, if left empty, might have led to
resentment. She got to look forward to my readings and when we broke up a
while later she kept my copy of Vineland.
Torn between asking for my book back or being psyched she's onto Pynchon
now...

it is easy in solitude to live after our own;
but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd
keeps with perfect sweetness
the independence of solitude.--Emerson
