In the world again. I hereby want to greet all list members
(both workers and lurkers) I saw in the New World: those from
Hamilton, Austin, Kingston, Denton, Okanagan, Nashville, L.A.,
Brooklyn, Detroit, and Manhattan (btw, has Chris K told you
how a friend of hers, Jared, coined the International Pynchon
Week: Pynchcon). And, last but not least: those on Oreole Road.

A FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS:
Conspiracy
conference
At King Alfred's College, Winchester, 17th-19th July, 1998.
As part of the establishment of a Centre for Conspiracy Culture at King
Alfred's College, we invite submissions for a conference focusing on
conspiracy, paranoia and alternative knowledges. The conference aims to
examine how in recent decades the discourse of conspiracy has become an
increasingly popular explanation for unfolding events, most prominently
in the USA. We invite contributions from a wide range of disciplines on
any aspect of the culture of conspiracy in the period 1945 to the
present, predominantly but not exclusively with an American focus.
Topics could include:
7 the New World Order & globalisation
7 aliens & ufos:, eg Roswell & Area 51
7 assassinations and cover-ups
7 viruses and body panics
7 conspiracy and the Internet
7 racial and ethnic paranoia, eg ghetto drugs
7 the national security state
7 the culture of secrecy and freedom of information
7 conspiracy on film & TV, eg The X-Files
7 paranoid literature (eg Pynchon, Burroughs, DeLillo)
7 popular culture and conspiracy, eg in tabloids
7 postmodern theory: fragmentation & connectedness
King Alfred's College is set on a green campus site in Winchester
within walking distance of the city centre. The city offers many sites
of historical interest, including the medieval Cathedral and (allegedly)
King Arthur's round table. There are many facilities for the visitor,
and a full range of shops, restaurants and pubs. Winchester is an hour
by rail from London Waterloo.
Accomodation, meals ,and all conference sessions will take place on the
campus. We anticipate setting a reasonable fee, with concession for
graduate students and for the un-waged. Details will be determined
shortly.
Please send abstracts (100-200 words) by December 10th 1998, or for
