Emmet Grogan is the name you're looking for here. Grogan was the original Digger (60's version) and author of "Ring-a-levio". Coyote was a convert.

BTW, I think that the Digger references here are actually to the original Diggers, a group of anarchistic agrarian reformers several hundred years back. THEY came down very hard on the Diggers and pretty much obliterated them from the face of the earth.
