CK sed Bringing the conversation back to M&D, I would like to ask/add:  
Is it
not true in Buddhism that enlightenment can be attained without Divine
intervention?  That peace and fulfillment can be attained without the
proxy of a priest or, especially, of Savior from a celestial realm?

I always thought so.  We each, at certain moments in our lives, see 
things in others, what I would call "buddha-nature", something I would 
like to emulate in my life.  I would hope I give off some vibe to others 
too.  There is of course the Bodhisattva, who has reached enlightenment, 
but tries to help out the rest of us poor Homer Simpsons types.  Similar 
to a priest, me thinks (the good ones, at least).
Christ and Buddha each had those three trials:  lust, fear, and that urge 
to sit still and bask in the glow of the afterlife, which both rejected 
and went out to preach the good word. I'm sure there's lots of Buddhists 
out there who haven't killed the Buddha yet....all relative
