Greg,

I like your strategy of reading GR along with something else. I did
something recently with Mason & Dixon last year, read it alongside Francis
Parkman's _France and England in North America_, a classic 19th century
historical work that covers the pre-Revolutionary period. Lots of echoes
and resonance.
