The Frenesi/Brock episode has got me wondering about ol' Brock again too.
Could it be that the Brock we're seeing might not be Pynchon's Brock, but
instead (if you'll allow such delicate hair-splitting), the Movement's
Brock? Refracted through the eyes, and lens, of 24fps into something
(conveniently) other than Us - one of Them. In the context of the novel, a
final exam for the truly Attentive (character and reader alike); deal with
Brock, *understand* Brock, and you've made it to the top of the ladder. Not
that he isn't an enemy to be reckoned with, but that war-like engagements
with the Brock's of the world only mirror - and ultimately perpetuate - the
fascism they purport to oppose. In Pynchon's books, there seems to be a
difference between the System and those who serve it - as much pawns as
those who oppose it, just a better pay-scale.
Does this mean Frenesi has reached some such understanding? I don't think
so. Nor do I buy the explanation that she really hopes that she's the one to
turn *him* (sounds like a rationalization to me, and a half-hearted one at
that). Puzzling. Frenesi's motivations aside, perhaps we can read the
liason as a, somewhat forced, parable for the Attentive; no matter how
widely "speciated" we believe ourselves to be from Them, we're always
willing to do the wild thang.
