Thanks. I was thinking more about the preterite. For me it varies from
author to author. I love reading Sherlock Holmes, and can't say I've ever
given Conan Doyle more than a glancing thought. I've thought a lot about
Thomas Pynchon. And then there are authors like John Irving who prompt me
to think about them in some books (Garp) but not in others (Owen Meaney).
