This is the old academic argument about not having to know anything about the
artist to "comprehend" his ouvre.  Thou also shall never talk about the
artist's "intentions".  However we are no longer in school are we, so we can
talk about any part of it that interests us.  And if we think we can
"conditionally become Pynchon" then why not? 
P. might not have meant it in the way it was read but I found it an
interesting observation.
