Frenesi's inscrutability in her "turning" is finally making some sense to
me, I think, in a structural way. We are meant to be mystified. We, along
with Prarie, are on a mission to reconstruct Frenesi in her absence. Her
appearance in "real time", at the beginning and end of the book create the
gap of absence in which we, as detectives, must scrutinize the past for
clues. Who is this woman? How could she have been such a creep? For
Prarie the questions seek after the formation and reconciliation of her own
identity.
