Neil says:
>His bright blue mohawk was shaved off a couple of weeks ago and now the
>stubble coming in is acid green on the left and magenta on the right.
The left side is also grue. In _Fact, Fiction, and Forecast_ (there's a
3rd ed., and there was a 1st in 1955, but I have the 2nd: Indianapolis,
Bobbs-Merrill, 1965, p. 74), Nelson Goodman posed a "new riddle of
induction" by defining "grue" as applying to things examined before some
arbitrary future time t if they are green, but to things not so examined if
they are blue. "Then at time t we [will] have, for each evidence statement
asserting that a given emerald is green, a parallel evidence statement
asserting that that emerald is grue. And the statements that emerald a is
grue, that emerald b is grue, and so on, will each confirm the general
hypothesis that all emeralds are grue." Hence, the prediction that the
first emerald examined after t will be green and the prediction that it
will be grue are equally justified. But if that emerald is grue, "it is
blue and hence not green." The mohawk was also bleen.
