Reading Pynchon's works in their order of publication-- the short stories
(mostly collected in Slow Learner), V., CL49, GR, VL, M&D -- has a certain
appeal because Pynchon brings some characters with him from one to the
next, and seems to get deeper and deeper into his core issues as he goes
along. Given the high level of inter-connections between the novels,
however, it might be just as much fun to start with the one that seems most
appealing right now and follow the links to the rest; M&D is a fine novel,
fun to read, and highly rewarding. I don't agree with the argument that GR
or any Pynchon novel is particularly difficult to read, although they are
long and complex works of literature.
