An excerpt from Johann Wolfgang Goethe's most famous work, the dramatic
poem ``Faust.''
The excerpt, titled ``Faust contemplates the sunrise'' is taken from a
Penguin Classics edition of Goethe-Selected Verse:
``Life's pulses beat again, with living freshness,
In clement salutation to the ethereal dawn;
Earth, you have lasted out this night as well
And new-revived lie breathing at my feet,
Beginning to surround me with delight already,
Stirring, stimulating me to strong resolve:
Never to cease to strive towards supreme existence.
In the half-light the world already lies revealed;
Life sings in the forest with a thousand voices;
Long clouds lie spilled in and out of the valleys,
But heavenly brightness is penetrating deeper down,
And branches and boughs, freshly revived, have risen into sight
Out of the misty chasm where they slept submerged;
And bright colors detach themselves one after another from the depths,
Where flowers and leaves have been dripping with tremulous pearls:
All round me, a paradise comes into being.''
Good Friday, all!
Cheers,
