And the fretless model has been made famous by the wonderful playing of Jaco
Pastorius (who simply took the frets off and filled the slots with Duratite
wood putty: "To protect the fingerboard from the abrasive roundwound
strings, he coated it with about ten layers of a marine epoxy called
Petitt's Poly-Poxy.  This provided a harder surface that gacve the bass a
