I can't exactly disagree with this but think other virtues of M&D might be
emphasized above the fact that it's the latest. For a long while Vineland
also was the latest. Speaking for myself M&D exploited historic events
that had not yet captured the imagination. It was not just more Pynchon.
I'm not silly enough not to accept that for other p-listers this function
may have been served by Vineland as well.
I recently reread Vineland so now at least know what people are talking
about.
