On p. 75 of the Dalkey Archive edition of Imaginative Qualities
of Actual Things (a distinctly un-Pynchonesque book btw, one
which I am somewhat guiltily enjoying -- "guiltily" for other
reasons than "that it is not Pynchonesque", silly) is this:
Guy's old friend [footnote: this phrase may be read as an example
of lingua franca] in the south of France was finally published by
a commercial house in New York. His reputation had grown through
his appearances in little magazines, and the publisher had
finally decided to take him on to show that he wasn't afraid of
publishing "fresh, young voices." You could die laughing. So that
the friend, importuned by Guy, acted as a go-between for him with
his editor -- a "hip, young editor," you of course understand.
Every publishing house worth its salt has one. They're the ones
who find books like _V_. Very hip, indeed. Very young.
