I've been letting this one percolate, and trying to figure out why I really
resent (lack of a better) Frenesi, and sympathize with Zoyd, and this whole
Possession thing--do you really thin, MR. M, that a real man wants absolute
posession over the woman? I bet there's a few gals out there that would
take you to task for that statement. I think that Zoyd never really wanted
to possess F, per se, but protect her, as he's said--keeping her from
knowing just how shitty things can get (bad papraphrase--sorry). A real
man, say a John Wayne Man, would first and foremost want to protect his
family, or at least go Josey Wales if something happened to it. What Zoyd
sought, as witnessed by their groovy wedding ceremony, was an equal--not a
superior, and that's what he got--she was more motivated than he was, more
politically-oriented, blah blah blah. She overshadowed him, perhaps?
I resent Frenesi, first of all, for leaving her child behind, and yet at the
same time I think it was the most selfless thing she did; b/c of Zoyd, her
daughter was brought up very well, IMHO. Unorthodox, sure, but Z did a
pretty swell job. And I resent her for ankling out on her family--shitty
thing to do. B/c she split, Prairie lost out on some Kodak moments with her
relatives, the T's and The B's. However, and here's the thing--I like
Frenesi when she's with DL. I will also admit that I've followed what seems
to be one of her basic tenets myself: "Let's cause trouble, and then
leave!" Maybe DL isn't Frenesi's Ace in the Hole as much as she is her
Friend. F's healthiest (?) relationship is with DL.
Oh hell--it's been a long day, but the discussion of the last week or so has
been very thought-provoking and actually fun, as _Vineland_ is one Pynchon
novel that I have NOT written a paper on,
M.
