I did the same thing in 1974 when my first read through it began. I
got through the first two parts, turned the page to go "In the Zone"
and said "NO MORE!!" The book (the old Bantam) lay where it fell for
three days and, like the literary masochist I am, began it again. I
liked the "Candy Drill" then, too, as I mentioned in an earlier post.
Then Jill wrote:
"Lately, Gary T. , rj and Michael P. have pointed out references to
Slothrop's character or other things that just drive home for me how
HOLLOW the character of Slothrop is and how flimsy the premise of
discovering where the bombs are going to fall based on some character's
erections."
We don't really know Slothrop all that much at this point in the book.
What seems to me to be most important about Slothrop at this point is
what OTHER PEOPLE think ABOUT Slothrop then Slothrop himself. His
suspicions after leaving St. Veronica's is the first inkling of any
substance to his character really. Even the rocket/erection hypothesis
is that of other people. The connection may only be in the minds of
other people, because Slothrop's map may not be what it is believed to
be by those people.
