Not the first, but the best reference source in re: Menippean Satire and
Pynchon is Theodore Kharpertian's _A Hand to Turn the Time:  The Menippean
Satires of Thomas Pynchon_ (London: Associated University Presses, 1990). 

Opening fifty pages deal with the slippery nature of the term in a
historical and critical context. Damn fine book.
