_Memories of the Ford Administration_ is a very good parody of
metafiction and deconstruction. _Brazil_ has its moments too.
As to the assertion that Updike is "one of the most important novelists
of the late 20th century", well, it's too relative and subjective and
ethnocentric, not to mention a bit premature, to be making such claims.
"Prolific" perhaps, occasionally "mediocre" . . .
