"Eyeties" is indeed British slang for Italians.  I'm not familiar with 
"Giovinezza," but "Rigoletto" & "La Boheme" are two very frequently performed 
operas.  Also, the Brits called the Germans "Jerries." The Americans mostly 
called them "Krauts."
