I was a bit taken aback by this passage, and here's why: people I have known
with this kind of detailed analytical access to their dream lives have
generally been in psychoanalysis for a good long while. (I, for instance,
have not been in analyis much and have only a fairly broad, vague waking
access to my dreams.) Pointsman strikes me not at all as the type to have
been in therapy -- if anything he is aggressively not self-analytical. Is he
an exception to my rule? I guess so; it just strikes me as odd to see him
thinking about his dream in that amount of detail. (Of course it could be
argued that the narrator here is the asleep Pointsman, the one that is
actually dreaming, or is a third party with access to his thoughts.)
