And exactly for this reason I suspect these "a friend of mine had lunch
with Pynchon..." stories are apocryphal.  Among that crowd "lunch"
is what one "has" with literary figures.  Urban legend-like, the good
Pynchon stories happen to "a friend".  It conveys less coolness and
authority to say "I head that Pynchon was having lunch with someone,
and..."
