The thing of it is, for me, even after having read the book many times and
therefore probably  retaining deep down an exhaustive file of what those
'real' significances are, still it's the momentary, tentative, 'false'
significances that occupy full attention and that I care about. So are the
'false' significances really false?


It's a tiny bit like seeing an old movie on tv. I will remember much of
the detail of who says or does what and when  but will have no idea how
the plot is ultimately resolved. (maybe it's just me)
