I agree with Doug here.  Like great poetry, Pynchon is referencing stuff 
while describing some other thing entirely.  Though the view is out of the 
corner of the eye, it is no less on target and terrifying. The Holocaust 
pervades GR, but some may get distracted by the numbers put asunder by the 
growing Kingdom of Death, human, animal, mineral, cosmological, etc.
Note that the scariest stories involve things that are only glimpsed 
momentarily.  Seems we've forgotten how to be scared.
