I quote Public Enemy, "Don't Believe The Hype". My brother did a very good
paper on the oft-debated theory how the Arab Oil Embargo destoyed the
Metafiction market, P included. It's interesting when you consider Stephen
King's career took off in that same time. But trust me, OPEC wasn't kind to
a family dependent on a Chrysler paycheck either. The List holds Kubrick in
some high honor which is assinine how when you consider he takes a scythe to
some very good books & authors, P oft begins as a parody of himself, but K
seems to take every author's bit of material, serious or not and parody
it-both "Shining" and "Eyes Wide Shut" have a thing with rich folk orgy in
costume that would be right at home in say, "Blow Up" or early 70's Ken
Russell. This is a new era. Other works that come to mind include "Lolita",
I won't include the Shining, that tv movie sunk it, but, say, "Full Metal
Jacket" is truly great when it's on the same rhythm as "The Short Timers"
ironically when the book gets to Vietnam it kicks out the jams while the
overthought Kubrick film meanders and is as gripping as an episiode of "Baa
Baa Black Sheep".
I believe in 2 Essential Things, 1.) The farther away from "2001" the more
Kubrick lost it and
2.) The conventional wisdom of the Listserv is that no one is ever capable of
making a good movie based on P(and here's where you lose me) but if anybody
was, Kubrick would have been the one.
