I found a reference to "jays" in Merry Wives of Windsor (Act III, Sc. III),
where Mrs. Ford says, "we'll teach him to know turtles from jays."  

My edition interprets "turtles from jays" as "i.e., devoted wives from
wantons."  (I believe "turtles" means "turtle-doves.")
