"You vere ekshpecting maybe *Lessie*?" replies the dog. (44.20)

Is Roger actually replying to the dog when he says, "*Come* on mate, it'll
be over before you know it" a couple of lines later? Is the dog's comment
just a result of Roger's ether consumption? And how about those baby
carriage overtones -- my first thought is of the baby (La Revolucion) the
politicians are all claiming as their own on p. 263, but in the present
instance Roger is of course trying to dognap and anesthetize the baby in
question.

The dog's speech, and the narration from the dog's point of view, links up
quite nicely with the L.E.D. in M&D; with Desmond, who begins and ends
Vineland, too. What is it with TRP and dogs?
