Whenever I read the Scene in Question (the bit inside the dog's mind as
s/he reacts nervously to Pointsman's presence) the first thing that comes
to mind is: a scene in _Anna Karenina_, the one where (I'm a bit shaky on
the names here but) Levin's dog Vaska is leading Levin and his friend
around the hunting grounds on his estate. Tolstoy also wrote very nice dog
stories.
