Perhaps.  We get to see both, and it's not surprising at all that the
description of the desk breaks off immediately into a description of Bloat
shooting the map.  The desk certain can be seen as another map of a portion
of Slothrop, if you assume that you can glean notions of character from its
contents (and from its disorder, wherein iit seems to me that the borders
do begin to break down into disorder, pencil stubs mixed with zippo flints
mixed with puzzle pieces etc).  Considering the orderly grid that
eventually gets projected onto Slothrop's map, I think it makes for a
beautiful contrast.
