Yo Dude,
           Right on, right on!  I think sometimes overmuch is made of small 
detail for which your (cj833) explanation is the one I am most in sympathy.  
Conversely, there are things I think TRP offers as if they were as small a 
detail (which have enormous consequence) that are just dismissed as small 
details.  In a way that makes our job doubly difficult: we must sort, like 
Maxwell's Demon, the unimportant details from the important (but seemingly 
unimportant) ones.  That takes a lot of work.  Maybe Mexico's attribution of 
human intelligence to the dog is just Pynchon's way of having a little fun.  
Another factoid we will have to bear in mind as the band plays on.  But what 
do I know?
