If my memory serves correctly, DePalma wanted a shoot-out on a moving train
but the producers balked at the cost (immense) so, give this sort of economic
censorship, he asked for a staircase, a baby carriage, and a clock. I've seen
The Untouchables with several people and only one, a film major, realized
DePalma's hommage to Eisenstein (sp?). The rest thought it was a suspenseful
scene. Thus DePalma served three masters at once: The paying audience, the
tight-fisted producers, and film lovers.

Sort of the way Pynchon can serve himself, readers, and people who like to
research behind the words.
