minutiae from the zone

I'm vacationing in Germany at the moment, just back from buying Slow
Learner and Vineland auf Deutsch. I managed to resist the urge to buy the
first three again, just because they have new covers, in the vague hope
that my cash might last me until it's time to come home.

Anyhow, I thought I'd mention (probably again) that the literal translation
of the German title of Gravity's Rainbow is "The Ends of the Parabola."

And I was also surprised to see a picture of a young man's face on the
cover of Slow Learner. It doesn't look like our man. I don't recall
previous discussion of this,-- do we know who it is? (If this hasn't been
discussed, I'll scan the cover and make it available to the list after I
return.)

Oh, as a measure of how we value things,-- a thin collection of Calvin and
Hobbes in German costs a bit more than either Slow Learner or Vineland (but
a bit less than Gravity's Rainbow).
