Several years ago I received a monograph statistically analyzing the
demographics of jazz listeners. This particular study stated that over
70% of the jazz audience are white males between (I can't remember the
ages) with graduate degrees. Of course, the study ignored the musical
subcultures which are thriving below the threshold of commercial
visibility such as the late Horace Tapscott's neighborhood music scene
in LA's Crenshaw district. There the music is happening in people's
homes and churches unbeknownst to most of the white grad boys.
